Symph Engineering Principles for 10x Productivity

Symph Engineering Principles for 10x Productivity

Symph, since 2010, has collaborated with over 200+ companies/businesses and have helped create thousands of impactful solutions across the industry.

That said, this productivity has been a continuous learning process for us and over the years we have identified the key principles we apply behind the scenes as a tech team that has helped us achieve high levels of productivity in Software Engineering.

Assuming Positive Intent

At Symph, we believe in the power of "Assuming Positive Intent." It's a simple idea, but one that has a big impact on how we work together as a team. Assuming positive intent takes all the drama out of human feedback and communication by shifting focus on being objective about what the team is trying to achieve.

This happens when we give open feedback, when we do PR reviews, or during high-pressure situations where roundtable discussions need to be done. When we give or receive feedback, we try to approach it with an open mind, trusting that the other person means well. The same goes for code reviews – we look at each other's work with the understanding that we're all trying to make the codebase better. In high-pressure situations where we need to have tough conversations, we make an effort to assume that everyone wants what's best for the project and the company. With this, we can have more productive discussions, make better decisions, and ultimately deliver better results.

Promoting Project Empathy

Our developers have direct communication with clients and those involved in the project. This helps our team fully understand the project's needs and goals. The projects are driven by the developers themselves and supported by the Project managers. Our developers take ownership and help shape the direction of the project. By having this close connection with clients, our developers gain valuable insights into the real-world challenges faced by the end-users and ensure there is a connection between tech and the context of the business. This builds a strong sense of empathy that motivates our team to deliver impactful solutions. Through project empathy, we improve efficiency, and quality, and create an environment where new ideas can flourish. Our clients' success becomes our shared goal.

Pushing for Clarity

We don't just nod and move on without fully understanding the details. We ask questions and make sure we clearly understand what we need to know. People are encouraged to ask questions. Clear communication and collaboration are very important to us. We want everyone to be on the same page and address any concerns. By promoting clarity throughout our process, we can tackle even complex challenges with confidence. We gather the knowledge and insights needed to provide solutions that truly meet our clients' needs.

Embracing Transparency

Did you know that Symph has a “No DM” (Direct Message) policy? Embracing this policy means fewer avenues for miscommunication and information ball juggling. This means that all communication should go through our Group Chat Channels where possible. This helps us avoid communication gaps and bridges clarity across the team because now everyone is on the same page and knows exactly what is going on with each other. By embracing transparency, we build a strong foundation of trust and collaboration, enabling us to tackle even the most complex challenges together.

Embracing Agile Mentality

We understand that being flexible and able to adapt quickly is important. That's why we use Agile methods, which allow us to make changes and improvements as needed. Regular stand-up meetings, planning sessions, and retrospectives are key parts of how we work. And we do them by being mindful of it, not being dragged or having a meeting “just for the sake of”. These help us communicate openly, improve continuously, and ensure everyone understands priorities.

Maximizing AI Augmentation

We encourage the use of AI tools in the workspace and this made it possible for various automation to flourish such as AI code Reviewer, AI PR Descriptor, AI augmentations for IDE, AI-powered Accomplishments report, AI Powered Documentations and Diagrams, AI Powered Testing, and many more. This has made it possible for various automations to develop and 10x our productivity. I’ll share more about this in the coming blog posts but over the recent year of maximizing these AI tools and workflows, we have significantly boosted the overall efficiency and productivity of our work.

Hiring A-Players

A-players want to work with A-players, that's why we put a premium and an emphasis on hiring talented developers. We raise the bar in finding the right people, with the right mindset while also simultaneously offering a very competitive salary and benefits equivalent to that of international salary rates. (Internally we call them i18n)

By bringing together a team of highly skilled software engineers, we've created a dynamic and collaborative environment. Our A Players push each other to come up with new ideas, think critically, and constantly improve. This culture of growth benefits our team and our clients. We've seen firsthand how a strong team of A Players directly impacts the quality of our work, the efficiency of our processes, and the satisfaction of our clients.
