For our #HumansofSymph series, let’s be motivated by the story of Tony Dela Cruz, our resident Full stack developer, and how this previous casino worker became a self-taught Full stack developer in Symph.
Brief History
“I initially did not know anything about the IT industry at all because I studied HRM in college. During that time, I was not really interested in anything related to IT, but I generally knew technology would just keep improving in the future, and it made me want to be a part of it. Before I became a Full stack developer, I actually worked in the casino. Working there was a wonderful experience, you get to meet people coming from different walks of life from different countries and learn table games (such as Baccarat and Three Card Poker in my case). I also really enjoyed the ambiance of the casino - the lights, music, hotels, restaurants, and events. It's literally a place that never sleeps!”
Shifting to the IT Industry
“I was happy to venture into IT. Although it was really hard for me at first since I had to learn everything without having any prior knowledge in web development. I learned how to code with a coding Bootcamp course here in Manila, it’s there where I learned the basics of HTML, CSS, JS, and React.Learning how to code was a challenge for me since I had to learn everything related to it from scratch, but eventually, every time I got something to work on and understand how it works it fills with me a sense of accomplishment and it drives me to learn more. Now I get to enjoy working with really smart people, it got me to develop new habits to keep improving myself and it opened doors for me to be able to work in companies like Symph.”
Why Symph, Tony?
“I got interested in Symph from when they showcased their culture on their website, how their teams collaborate, and that they provide an environment for everyone to learn and grow. Being here now as part of the team I have to say, this company lives up to what they say and more.”
What's a day in the life of a Full stack developer in Symph?
"I wake up, start my day with kick-off syncs, attend client meetings, code/collaborate/learn with my wonderful teammates, join learning clubs to learn new skills, end the day with a team retrospective or non-work activity, repeat!”
